Product introduction

A general purpose relay is an electromagnetic switch that can be controlled remotely to connect or disconnect a circuit. It is a versatile component commonly used in various applications to control electrical devices, automate processes and manage power distribution. When selecting a relay for a specific application, consider factors like coil voltage, switching speed and the environment in which the relay will operate. Relays involve high voltages and currents, so proper precautions should be taken to ensure safety during installation and maintenance.

A general purpose relay consists of several key components
  • Coil : The coil is an electromagnetic winding that generates a magnetic field when current flows through it.
  • Contacts : Relays have one or more sets of contacts which physically connect or disconnect the circuit when the relay coil is energized or de-energized.
  • Armature : The armature is a moveable component within the relay that is attracted to the magnetic field of the coil. When the coil is energized, the armature moves, causing the contacts to change position.

Applications
  • Industrial Automation : They are used to control motors, solenoids, valves and other devices in manufacturing processes.
  • Home Automation : Relays can be used to control lights, fans and other appliances remotely.
  • Power Distribution : They play a role in managing power distribution, protecting circuits from overload or faults.
  • Automotive : In vehicles, relays are used for controlling headlights, window motors and more.
  • Security Systems : Relays can be used in security systems to trigger alarms or control access.
  • Telecommunications : They are used to switch between different phone lines or routes in communication systems. In order to control relays using digital signals from microcontrollers or other low-power sources, relay driver circuits are often used. These circuits provide the necessary current to energize the relay coil.
